A Thanksgiving Giveaway

Thanksgiving seems like the Rodney Dangerfield of holidays. There's always a mad dash from Halloween to Christmas. Okay, so maybe Thanksgiving celebrates gluttony and football. But what I like about it is that it gives me time to reflect on the good people in my life and to acknowledge the blessings I've experienced.

I've decided to have a giveway. It requires no special skill. No artistic ability necessary. It would be great if you would leave a comment about one thing for which you're thankful this year.

This is for the yarn lovers out there: 2 hanks (350 yards each) of superwash merino sock yarn. Sundara Yarn produced a special colorway in Tulip to celebrate Spring 2008. On November 17, I'll randomly draw the name of the lucky recipient.

Hello fellow KRer (MindyO). Saw your post and thought I would comment.
I think this season the things I am most thankful for are
1)That I still have a job(that I love), being in retail and the market tanking I'm really lucky
2)family/friends this time of year especially
3) KR, all the great helpful people in the knitting community
4)Yarn,needles, and the knowledge to use them. (realy can any knitter comment and NOT include yarn :)?)
Hope you have a great holiday season and a great 2009
Mindy
Just recently I escaped unscathed from various kinds of trouble. All were at least partly my own doing. I'm fine even though I don't deserve it. For that I'm truly thankful!

Just ONE thing to be thankful for this year? There are so many. I'm thankful for my husband, who is working night and day to try to stabilize this country's financial system, to my children, who bring joy to my life every day, to my dog, who understands when I need "a hug", to this country, for coming together peacefully every 4 years even when things seem like they're falling apart, and to people like you, who despite what may be going on in their lives, exhibit so much generosity.

I'm thankful for so many things, but one of the greatest blessings of my life is my love of books and reading. As a high school librarian for 22 years, I witnessed far too often students who hated having to check out and then read a book. If they would allow it, I was frequently able to put a book in their hands they would enjoy--or at least not hate. I once mentioned to a boy that one of the greatest blessings of my life is my love of reading. His reply? "You're making fun of me, aren't you?" I assured him I wpuld never do that, but it served to remind me that many homes are rich in video games, TVs, and other forms of technology yet, when it comes to the written word, are in abject poverty.

Thank you, Mary, for an opportunity to be reminded of the many gifts we have all around us.

Thanks for posting your link on KR. I am thankful to be employed at a time when so many people are not. I am thankful for all the good friends in person and on line who supported me during my breast cancer fight this year. Most of all, I am thankful to be cancer free.

Just one? Yikes. In addition to all the usual suspects (health, happiness, family, friends, job) I'm thankful to have the good sense to appreciate and know how to make things with yarn. Having a hobby that exercises my creativity and my fine motor skills, that can produce fanciful or the practical end results, is truly a blessing. So many people that I know have lives that revolve around just work and TV - I feel truly thankful that there's more to me than that.

ps. Lovely blog! Thank you so much for holding this contest! :)

I am thankful for the ability to keep on knitting with a tremor that makes other crafts difficult.

I am thankful for my beloved daughter, who even callec *me* for relationship advice. (!!!)

I am thankful and honored that a young friend, same age as my daughter, called me to talk about his grandfather's death.

I am thankful for my husband of 30 years, who still loves me, in spite of all my failings and difficulties.

Thanks be to God for the beauty of life and the earth.

The one thing I am thankful for is the lady who taught me to knit. At a time when I had some health problems and many doctor appointments, she knew that knitting would get me through it! If I win the yarn, I will give it to her. Thanks.

How generous of you! I would love to be in the drawing.

I am thankful for my wonderful husband! I had to wait 52 years to find the love of my life, but I'm so glad it happened. I'm also grateful for our combined 4 grown children and 4 grandchildren. Family is a blessing.

Before going into the thankfulness I have to say your blog design is just lovely.

I'm thankful for my husband, our family, our friends, our pets.....

and thanks for doing the giveaway!

It's really great that you ask bloggers to submit what they are thankful for, esp. after monumental events of recent weeks.

I am thankful to live in a land where we can express our diversity freely. It unifies diversity and helps us all understand how much, much farther we need to progress in our understanding of each other and the world. Connected with this is being able to express creativity, esp. the kind for the common good. And even though I'm a little nervous about world events right now, there is a lot to be said for having a wonderful husband, a roof over my head, food to eat (and the ability to cook it well), and good friends.

Hi, and what a lovely sound as I read your interesting blog..
I am thankful for artists like Sundara, and others, and that they are able to practice their art despite the mass marketing whirling about us all.

Thank you for this offer. The "Tulip" colorway is one of her loveliest, and I missed the chance to purchase some of it.

Best wishes, Anna

Can never resist a good little giveaway. ;)

This year, I'm thankful that my husband and I are employed--that everything seems to be going very well. I'm thankful that we can afford the pets that we love, and that we can both make room for the hobbies that we love. (LIKE YARN!)

Mostly, though, I suppose I'm just thankful that things are okay. There are bad days, and good days, but regardless...everything is okay. :)

Thanks so much for linking your blog on ravelry. It's always wonderful to find a reminder to reflect on the things that we're grateful for.

I'm most thankful for my son, the most beautiful surprise of my life. From him I've learned to listen, to dance for joy, to stand up for another person when it really matters, to pause and breathe and really look, and that a cape can be made appropriate attire in just about any situation.

I am thankful for SO many things!

First and foremost I am thankful to be alive. I can very close to losing my life a couple of years ago and have lived each and every day since then with a deep appreciation and gratitude for simply being alive.

I am so very thankful for my dear husband. He is my biggest source of support and strength. I am unspeakably proud of him, of the man that he is, and honored to call him my husband and my friend.

I hope you and your family have a blessed and happy Thanksgiving.

I'm thankful for many things including my family and friends who have been a tremendous support to me through a difficult year. However I am most thankful for the time I was able to spend with my beloved Gram before she passed away in September. She was central figure in my life and my families. She was a feisty, independent woman who always spoke her mind. I cherish our time together and there isn't a day that goes by that I don't miss her terribly.

Despite grumbling about the everyday, when I sit down and think I am so grateful for my family, and especially for having two healthy children as I see kids every day who are struggling with health issues. We have a home and wonderful new pets, and I have a job in which I know every day that I am needed. Oh, and I learned to love knitting (and yarn) this year!

What a generous giveaway! I'm thankful for tons of things, but at this very moment that I type this, I'm thankful for the pot of tea that's brewing and all the birds/squirrels feasting at the feeders that I can see outside my window.
I know this sounds corney- but in prticular this year, I am truely thankful for my health. Earlier this year I had a head trauma at work and have subsequntially been diagnosed with epilepsy disorder. Thankfully, I am being monitored and medicated- but just staying in the hospital for a week and the constant batttery of tests really opened by eyes to how much we all take things like good health for granted.

What a nice thing to do for the holidays!

I am thankful that this year I learned to crochet. Not only has it given me tremendous creative satisfaction I was missing in my life, but it's brought the people I love joy when they receive the gifts I make them. And, I've met some friendly and fun knitters and crocheters who share the same passion.

Last October I was almost killed by a car while crossing the street. I suffered extensive injuries and was in a halo last Thanksgiving. I was thankful to just be alive. This year I am thankful for the love and support that I got from my family throughout the healing process. I am thankful that my children saw their mother fight for her life and win. Most of all, I am thankful for the love and support of my best friend, lover, partner, and confidant, my husband.

I'm thankful for the wonderful people I've met in the knitting community, who understand my passion so well.

I'm thankful that I'm still crazy about my husband and that I still find him to be the funnest person I ever met.

I lost my job this year, and have spent the last several months trying to put back all of the pieces of my life that were shattered. I am thankful for my family who helped me through it all, and for the opportunity to recreate myself into someone I like better. And I am thankful to people who give away gorgeous yarn! ~Laurel (laurelib on Ravelry)

This might sound silly, but I am thankful for my two cats. :) No matter what is going on in my life, they always pull me through... they remind me that life doesn't need to be so serious, and of the important things like sleep, snacks, cuddling, and playtime. :) I adopted them during a really tough time, and I'm convinced that they saved my life and have gotten me through the past two years.

Hey! Thank you for checking out my blog and becoming a follower! I've been by your place before, and now I think I'm just going to have to follow you, too. Because good things follow good things.
This yarn looks like something my good friend, who is learning to knit her first socks, would LOVE. I've heard her say Merino wool many times. Sometimes when we weren't even talking about knitting, yarn, crafting, or anything about Merinos. She just has to say it sometimes.

I'm thankful for my three wonderful little boys who make life interesting and lots of fun, and a husband who likes hand-knit socks!

Hi Mary, thank you for linking to this at Ravelry! What a great blog.

I love this season because it's not about giving or getting anything. It's about reflecting on the year, counting your blessings, and being with family (not going to happen for me this year, but it's okay).

This year, I'm thankful for getting through surgery to remove several large-but-benign uterine tumors. In particular, I'm thankful for the surgeon's skill and the love/care of my family and friends. I'm also thankful for getting into a fantastic law school and surviving (even if it's just barely) my first year so far.

I'm thankful for generous bloggers who share the wealth with other knitters, of course. Also, that I live where I have a warm home and people who love me and friends that care very much about me. All the other 'things' in life seem less valuable next to family/friends/home.

I am thankful to wake up every morning in good health, to have my sister in the same town, and to have many many good friends in my life.
What a super nice giveaway!

In this year of tough economic times I'm thankful that both my husband and I are employed. Considering he was laid off in April (and found another job with same employer within 2 days) and I'm in the mortgage business, we are very fortunate.

I'm also thankful that I discovered knitting this year. It has opened up a creative side that I didn't know I had. Not only am I knitting, my photography has improved, I've dyed some yarn, and I'm beginning to quilt. Not bad for a math geek!

before i continue, you have a beautiful website...very calm, yet creative and inspiring!

i am thankful for so many things. i started listing them all out, but in the end it seemed redundant for me to list everyone i love. i guess what i am most thankful for besides all the amazing people in my life is the fact that i am constantly inspired/enraged/confused/enraptured/amazed with people i meet and things i see. i consider it an enormous gift from my mother to learn and empathize with everyone so that you don't become numb with the world and its many difficulties. with the hardships that she's had to endure, i cannot help but think that any difficulty i may face can always be endured with the love and support of your family, friends, and community.

thank you for giving me (and everyone else) the opportunity to share our thanksgivings and appreciate what we have to hold dear!

As always, I am thankful for my family. Every year that goes by, I love them more and more.

But this year, specifically, I am thankful for the privilege of being able to act in incredible shows and work with incredible people. I have had a truly amazing amount of theatre in my life this year.

Mary,

An early Thanksgiving hello to you and thank you for your generous giveaway.

Loved your playlist. While visiting my Grandmother a couple years ago, my Uncle decided that I needed to go home with all her albums. You can imagine the collection! I'm slowly going through them and turning them into CDs for her. Al Jolsen was my favorite.

Since my husband just lost his job, I am grateful just to have him and our daughter as my family. He is the most wonderful husband and I couldn't imagine having a better 14-year-old daughter (she is the light of both our lives).

We have our health, a roof over our head, food on our table and clothes on our back. I couldn't ask for anything more.
